Something close to me as I have several family members who have been impacted by breast cancer, and I had my own run in with a lump in 2003. It was incredibly scary, but thankfully because of being educated on feeling myself up I was able to confirm the lump, and have it evaluated quickly before it became a big concern.
Thankfully it was not cancerous after a biopsy, which felt like a Buick was firmly parked on my chest for a week.
In 2009 two of my aunts, one on each side of my family were diagnosed with breast cancer. One underwent a full double mastectomy. The same one whose mother passed away from breast cancer in the 1970's, when my father was only 14 years old.
We need a cure! Every year I donate to breast cancer related causes, sport my pink ribbon and encourage women to check their breasts for lumps at least once a month! It doesn't take long at all! If you are concerned with something, see your OB/GYN or Midwife, and go from there. It is important that you always follow up!
Remember ladies, there are things you can do to help lower your risk factors for breast cancer.
- Breast feed! - Simply breastfeeding can lower your risk for breast cancer!
- Watch your weight - Being overweight is a risk factor for increasing your risk of getting breast cancer
- Steer clear of BPA! - New research shows that women with more exposure to BPA in plastics in their day to day life have increased risks for breast cancer!
- MEN! - While men aren't a risk factor they CAN and DO get breast cancer!
Get involved this month!
DONATE! The more research is funded, the closer we come to finding a cure!
